Alaska Airlines Firearms Policy 2024: Flying with Guns, Firearms, and Ammo Guide

Alaska Airlines - Guns in Checked Baggage Only

Firearms and ammunition may be transported in Checked Baggage ONLY.  It is prohibited to bring a gun/firearm in your carry-on bag or attempt to bring a gun onto the plane.  The ONLY gun-related item that may be brought in your carry-on bag is a Rifle Scope. Holsters may also be brought on-board, but sometimes may cause issues at the TSA security screening checkpoint - it is recommended to pack your holster in your carry-on bag.

You must be 18 years of age or older to transport a firearm. [AMZ asins='B07B7ZB484,B09FS5JJM3,B094WBMGRM,B0001HCBOU']

Packing Your Firearm on Alaska Airlines

Firearms must be unloaded and carried in a locked, hard-sided container.  You may need multiple locks on some cases to ensure the case cannot be opened. Be sure NOT to use TSA-approved locks - only the passenger shall have the key or combination to the lock.

Your gun case must not hold any dangerous goods or prohibited items, such as, but not limited to, loose ammunition, flammable liquids, black powder, primers, or bear spray.

Ammunition on Alaska Airlines

All ammunition must be packed in a locked, hard-sided case, in your checked baggage - ammunition is prohibited in carry-on baggage.  Ammunition must be securely packed in its original packaging or in a case specifically designed to carry-on ammunition - loose ammunition is not accepted and is considered a dangerous good/prohibited item.  Loose ammunition in its original packaging/box is not accepted.

The projectile must be no larger than 11/16" in diameter.

You may check-in your ammunition either together with or separately from your firearm. Shell casings are accepted under the same rules as live ammunition (locked, crush-proof container designed for ammunition - not loose).

Alaska Airlines may accept ammunition inside a clip/magazine only if that clip/magazine is enclosed its own secure casing within a larger crush-proof locked firearm case.

Alaska Airlines Guns/Firearms Baggage Allowance

A maximum of 11 lbs (5 kg) of ammunition may be packed per customer on all international flights - keep in mind that you alone are responsible for knowing and following local laws for your final destination, as well as any connecting destinations.

On domestic flights, customers flying on flights numbers 3300-3499 are limited in 11 lbs / 5 kg of ammunition. On domestic flights numbered 001-1999 and 2000-2999, ammunition is limited to 50 lbs / 23kg.  No box may carry more than 11 lbs.

Alaska Airlines baggage fees may be charged for bringing your firearm.  Alaska Airlines will accept the following to be included as part of your standard checked baggage allowance - additional pieces will incur excess baggage charges:

- One rifle case with rifles, scopes, one shooting mat, noise suppressors and small tools, or
- One shotgun case with shotguns, or
- One pistol case with pistols, noise suppressors, one pistol telescope and small pistol tools

There is no limit to the number or type of firearms (e.g. rifles, shotguns, pistols) per case. Different firearm types may be in the same case as long as each type is properly packed.

Checking-In your Guns at the Airport with Alaska Airlines

You must declare all firearms at the Alaska Airlines counter when checking-in your bags. You will have to read and sign a special declaration for every firearm container you are checking-in. Follow the agents instructions at the check-in desk.

When claiming your firearm upon arrival, you must present photo ID and claim checks to retrieve your shotgun/rifle case at the baggage office. When connecting to another airline, you may need to claim and re-check your firearm with the next airlines - your gun cases may not be checked all the way to your final destination, and you have to declare and sign the declaration with every individual airline on which you are traveling.
