WestJet Airlines is a Canadian low-cost carrier that provides scheduled and charter air service to 85 destinations in Canada, the United States, Europe, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
Westjet now charges for the 1st checked bag on all flights, including flights within Canada, to/from the US, to/from Caribbean, to/from Europe, and to/from Asia. Be sure to note the INCREASED 1st and 2nd bag fees for flights to/from Europe, now costing $60-$71 for a 1st bag on Basic Fares and $90-$107 for a 2nd bag.
For 2023 Westjet has added an extra $10 fee per bag if paying for your bags at the airport or within the last 24 hours before your flight. The cheaper discounted rate (which was previously the standard checked baggage fee) will only apply if you pre-purchase your bags while making your reservation, or if you pay for them online ahead of time, at least 24 hours before your flight. If you add your bags online less than 24 hours before your flight, or at the airport on the day of departure, each bag will be $10 more expensive than the fees shown.
Please note that if flying with sports equipment, a handling fee of $50 CAD/USD will now be applied to surfboards, paddleboards, kiteboards, wakeboards and wave skis, boogie/skimboards and windsurfers when flying on Westjet. This is in addition to the standard baggage fees that will also apply (including checked bag fee, oversized fee, and overweight fee), which are all charged cumulatively when flying on Westjet. As such, Westjet's 2023 sports equipment policies make it not as friendly of an airline to sports enthusiasts as it used to be.
