Most airlines will accept your bike for travel to your destination. However, taking your bike on a plane will usually incur an additional fee of some sort.
A normal bike in most cases exceeds the maximum allowable linear dimensions of 115cm (62 in). That is, length + width + height = 115cm/62 in. This means it cannot travel as a normal piece of luggage.
Some airlines allow an exemption to oversize fees for bikes, while others charge a special handling fee for these. Sometimes, there may be an extra fee tacked on because it is an extra piece of luggage, above the 1 or 2 free bags allowed. Be sure to read and understand the rules for your airline before leaving to the airport. It is always a good idea to print out and bring with you the airline's specific bike policies, as many of the attendants will not know about any exemptions or rules.
Another tip: Do you really need to have your bike with you all the time? Sometimes it makes more sense to pack and ship it off ahead of your trip, so it is waiting for you upon your arrival. This will make your trip much simpler and easier, and may even come out cheaper than flying with your bike.
Oh, and be sure to pack your bike properly. The last thing you want is to be greeted with a broken bike upon your arrival.
Most importantly, enjoy your trip!

If your bike weighs less than 23 kg / 50 lbs, you will not be charged the Overweight fee, but you will still be charged the Oversize Baggage fee if your bike box is larger than 62 linear inches (L+W+H), which most bike boxes are unfortunately. This fee is $100, which is actually the exact same amount as the Overweight+Oversize fee, so if your bike box is large, don't worry about exceeding the 23 kg / 50 lbs weight limit, overweight fees, as it is already included, as long as your bike box comes in at less than 45 kg / 100 lbs. If you do manage to pack your bike into a bike bag that stays within the 62 linear inches size limit, you can save some money as you won't be charged the Oversize fee, you will only have to pay the Overweight fee if exceeding 23 kg / 50 lbs. The Overweight Baggage fee is $25 if weighing 23-32 kg (50-70 lbs), or $100 if weighing 32-45 kg (70-100 lbs).

A second customer purchased a Blue fare and is bringing a bicycle with no additional checked bags. Because the bicycle counts as a checked bag, the second customer would have an applicable $30 first checked bag fee plus the $100 bicycle fee. Please note: overweight baggage fees will not be assessed for bicycles. However, the maximum allotment of 99 pounds per bag still applies. Bicycle cases should contain bicycles only; cases containing additional items may be subject to excess baggage fees. Also note: if bicycle and container are less than 62 dimensional inches and under 50 pounds, the bike fee will not be assessed. Bicycles are accepted to all destinations EXCEPT to/from the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Peru and Port of Spain. Bicycles ARE accepted on flights to/from Cuba if they are in a plastic, hard-sided, padded case designed for bicycles and no more than 70 pounds and 80 linear inches (length + width + height). A bicycle fee will be applied if the bicycle and container are more than 50 pounds and 62 linear inches (length + width + height). Bicycles that are unsuitably packed or packed in boxes are not acceptable for check-in.

Jetstar.comJetstar.com Bikes PolicyJetstar will accept your bicycle within your baggage allowance, but you will be charged an Oversize Item fee of $25 AUD / NZD if your bike box is longer than 100 cm. The easiest way to do so is to add your "bulky item" via Manage my Booking on the Jetstar website.Keep in mind that your bicycle will count toward your total baggage weight allowance, so be sure your ticket includes enough weight allowance, or to purchase enough weight allowance, so that your bike box and suitcase all fit within your total weight allowance - otherwise a steep per KG fee will be charged for excess weight. When packing your bike, keep in mind that your bike box may not weigh more than 32 kg / 70 lbs, even if you have purchased a higher total weight allowance. Bicycles will not be accepted for carriage unless they are suitably packed in a Bike Box. Jetstar does not provide Bike boxes at the airport, so it is your responsibility to obtain one before your travel date. The bike must be packed in the following condition: Tyres must be deflated. Pedals must be removed. Handle bars must be fixed parallel to the frame. If the bicycle's length exceeds 180cm, the front wheel should be removed and fixed next to the rear wheel, within the pack. KLMKLM Bikes PolicyKLM will accept your bike for transport on its flights, however customers will no longer be able to check-in a bike as part of their ticketed baggage allowance - you will always be charged a special Bike Handling Fee. All bikes will now be charged as a "speciality" item; the same charges are applicable for flying with tandem bicycles.Reserve Your Bike on KLM Be sure to reserve your bicycle well ahead of time, as only a limited number of bicycles may be transported on each flight. You can reserve this via the "My Trips" section of the KLM website. Please reserve the transportation of your bicycle or tandem at least 48 hours before departure via KLM Customer Contact Centre. You must always pay an excess baggage fee for a bicycle or tandem. Packing Your Bicycle for KLM Flights Bikes must be packed in a box, container or bag that is specifically designed for bike transportation. The maximum dimensions for this bike box are 176.5 x 23.0 x 101.5 cm (69 x 9 x 40 in). The best way to protect your bike is by using a hardcover casing. However, a softcover casing is also allowed if it includes an internal protective packing material. Make sure that you turn the handlebars lengthwise along with the frame and that you remove pedals and other parts that are sticking out. We also recommend that you deflate the tyres, so they won't get damaged because of the pressure drop in the hold. Special KLM bike boxes may be available at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol for EUR 20 each (176,5 x 23 x 101,5 cm / 69 x 9 x 40 inch). The KLM bike box weighs 4,5 kg (10 lbs). E-Bikes on KLM Please note that E-Bikes are not allowed for transportation, unless you remove the battery. In most cases you will not be able to bring the battery with you, as it most likely exceeds the 160 Wh limit for lithium batteries allowed on board. You can bring batteries up to 100 Wh in your carry-on bag. If you want to bring a lithium battery up to 160 Wh with you in your hand baggage, you need to request permission. Batteries larger than 160 Wh are never allowed. If your itinerary includes a United Express flight, please contact United for information regarding aircraft cargo hold limits. United Airlines previously waived the Oversized bag fees for bicycles, but for 2023 they have removed this wording from their policy. It is now stated that "Oversized, overweight and extra items will be subject to additional fees". Standard checked baggage fees also apply.
