The Fishing Equipment (Rod Case + Tackle Box) will count as ONE piece of regular checked baggage, even if packed separately.
The Oversize Baggage Fee will be waived for the Fishing Rod Case.
Overweight Fees may still apply if exceeding 23kg / 50 lbs.
All other additional checked baggage rules apply.
Packing instructions
The fishing rod(s) must be packaged in a rigid and/or hard shell container specifically designed for shipping.
If otherwise packaged, items may be refused for carriage. Air Canada is not liable if and to the extent that any damage results from the inherent defect, quality or vice of the baggage.
We recommend packing your fishing rods into a hard shell / rigid case such as the Plano Airliner Telescoping Rod Case for maximum protection.

Your fishing rod case must be les than 2.00 meters to be brought free of charge. If longer than 2.00 meters, but less than 2.50 meters, it will be accepted but an Oversize Baggage fee will apply. Longer fishing rods will not be accepted, as must fly as Cargo.
On some smaller aircraft, such as the ones used on shorter domestic flights, there is a length limit of 1.80 meters due to the size of the aircraft. If the fishing rod case is narrow, it may be possible that fishing rods up to 2.20 m can be fit in, but this is not guaranteed.

One piece of fishing equipment is defined as two rods, two reels, and one tackle box. Fishing equipment may exceed 62 linear inches, but no more than 115 linear inches (length + height + width), without incurring an oversize fee.
The standard $30 1st checked bag fee or $40 2nd checked bag fee will still be charged. If your fishing equipment is in addition to two standard checked bags, you will be charged a $150 3rd bag / additional bag fee. Please note the higher $150 3rd / Extra Bag fee, which applies on all Alaska Airlines flights purchased on/after June 30 2023. The previous extra bag fee of $100 still applies to flights purchased before June 30 2023.
