The cost of flying with surfboards varies by airline. Most airlines will take your surfboard for a fee, but there are some airlines that do not accept surfboards as checked baggage.
When checking the regulations, be sure to note how many surfboards are accepted in each boardbag, as some airlines have a limit as to the number of boards that can be taken. There are also limits on the size of boards, so some longboards and SUPs cannot be taken with some airlines.
When flying with your surfboard, always use a proper travel boardbag with more padding than a typical day bag. Pad the rails well, and it is also recommended to use tail and nose covers to protect the boards while handling. You'll want to mark the bags as "Top Load Only" and "Fragile". At most airports, your surfboard will arrive at the oversize luggage carousel, rather than the normal luggage carousel with suitcases.

You will have to pay a special Sports Equipment fee to bring your surfboard on AraJet.It is cheapest to add a surfboard to your reservation online while making your original flight booking, as the price increases the closer you get to your departure. The most expensive option is to pay for your surfboard at the airport check-in counter. All sports equipment, including Surfboard Bags, are limited in weight to 32 kg / 70 lbs. Unfortunately AraJet officially specifies that sports equipment dimensions are limited to 158 cm / 62 inches in Linear Dimensions (L+W+H), which is completely unrealistic for a surfboard. This should not really be a problem, considering that AraJet specifically mentions that surfboards are accepted, but beware that this may cause some confusion at the check-in counter depending on the agent you encounter. Eastern Airlines | Yes | $100 USD | View Policy
Eastern AirlinesEastern Airlines Surfboards PolicyEastern Airlines does not specifically mention Surfboards as a sporting equipment item in their policies, however surfboards fit within their standard checked baggage policies.Eastern Airlines's standard baggage weight allowance of 32 kg / 70 lbs is more than enough for a standard board bag with a couple of boards, so you are unlikely to incur any overweight fees. The 80 inch / 203 cm linear dimensions limit will fit a boogie board/skim board, but most surfboards will exceed that limit - an oversize fee for items up to 115 inches / 292 cm will cost you $100 USD, and most board bags for standard surfboard/shortboards fit within that limit. Keep in mind that these are LINEAR DIMENSIONS (L+W+H), meaning that longboards will generally not fit within the 292cm/115 inch limit, so a 9' longboard will not fit within the limit.

Please note, this fee has been increased by JetBlue in recent years (previously only $50).Be aware that JetBlue theoretically only accepts ONE board per boardbag, and every board will incur this $100 handling fee. Whether the fee is assessed multiple times when packing multiple boards into a single board bag depends on the agent you get at the check-in counter, but JetBlue makes it clear in their policy that multiple fees will be assessed. When planning your surftrip, we recommend looking to book with Delta, Alaska, American, or Southwest, which have more surf-friendly policies. What is accepted: One (1) surfboard per case; size and weight restrictions do not apply, except items weighing more than 100 pounds will not be accepted as checked baggage. We recommend that surfboards travel in a hard-sided (rather than soft-sided) case to prevent damage. Jetstar.comJetstar.com Surfboards PolicyJetstar allows you to bring your surfboard with you as checked baggage, but you will be charged a $25 AUD / NZD "Bulky Item" fee. The easiest way to pay your surfboard's "bulky item" fee is by adding it to your booking ahead of time via the "Manage my Booking" option on the Jetstar website.Your surfboard bag is limited in length based on the aircraft type you are flying. The maximum allowed length of your board bag is as follows: Jetstar Airways International Flights on Boeing 787: Maximum Length - 277cm All Other Flights, including Domestic Flights: Maximum Length - 230 cm Please note, if your journey contains multiple flights with two or more aircraft types, the lesser of the limits applies. Keep in mind that your surf bag still counts toward your total baggage weight allowance, so be sure to check that your ticket includes enough weight allowance, or to purchase enough weight allowance, so that your boardbag plus any suitcases you are bringing together all fit within your total checked baggage weight allowance - otherwise a steep per KG fee will be charged for the excess weight. When packing your surfboards, keep in mind that no single checked item may weigh more than 32 kg, even if you have purchased a higher total weight allowance. If you are bringing a quiver of boards, you may need to pack your boards by splitting them into 2 separate board bags, so that no individual bag exceeds the 32 kg weight limit. If you're travelling with surfboards, make sure you arrive at the airport when check in opens for your flight. All bulky items must be packed appropriately in accordance with the guidelines, before being presented at check-in.

LufthansaLufthansa Surfboards PolicyLufthansa accepts surfboards, with a different set of fees depending on the length of the board (less than 2 meters, or more than 2 meters)The fees for shortboards, up to 2 meters, are already very expensive, and for larger surfboards they are even more ridiculous (up to 400 EUR on long-haul intercontinental routes), so we do NOT recommend Lufthansa for flying with surfboards. However, if you have no choice, here is the information for surfboard baggage fees for Lufthansa Airlines. We recommend that you make an early reservation for the item of sports baggage you wish to take with you. You must register sports baggage up to 24 hours before departure. The maximum thickness of the boardbag as stated by Neos Air is not realistic, so you should be able to exceed it without any trouble, as long as you do not exceed the length and width dimensions, and you stay within the 20 kg / 44 lbs weight limit. Otherwise, excess weight is charged at a rate of $11-$12 per KG on short-haul flights, $17-$19 per KG on long-haul flights, or a $50 flat fee (max 10 KG / 22 lbs) on flights to/from USA. United AirlinesUnited Airlines Surfboards PolicyUnited accepts surfboards, wakeboards and paddleboards checked as special items as long as they are packed in appropriate board bags and do not weigh more than 99.9 pounds (45.3 kg).United has removed their $150 flat service charge for a surfboard, but will charge all oversize/overweight/excess baggage fees for a board bag. This could quickly add up to more than their previous fee, as an oversize bag fee could easily be $200+, depending on destination, with an additional $100-$200+ overweight fee if exceeding 23 kg / 50 lbs. If flying with a surfboard, we recommend looking to book a flight with a different airline such as Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, or Delta, the exception being on flights to/from California. Surfboards fly FREE to/from California To celebrate surfing as the state sport of California, oversize baggage charges for surfboards, wakeboards and paddleboards will be waived for all customers traveling to and from California. Travelers with a connection through California are not eligible. First, second, excess and overweight bag fees ($100-$200 or more if exceeding 23 kg / 50 lbs, depending on destination) may apply. The skeg/fin must be removed or well-padded. The entire board must be encased in a suitable container to avoid scratching. United is not liable for damages.
