Flying with Surfboards

The cost of flying with surfboards varies by airline. Most airlines will take your surfboard for a fee, but there are some airlines that do not accept surfboards as checked baggage.

When checking the regulations, be sure to note how many surfboards are accepted in each boardbag, as some airlines have a limit as to the number of boards that can be taken. There are also limits on the size of boards, so some longboards and SUPs cannot be taken with some airlines.

When flying with your surfboard, always use a proper travel boardbag with more padding than a typical day bag. Pad the rails well, and it is also recommended to use tail and nose covers to protect the boards while handling. You'll want to mark the bags as "Top Load Only" and "Fragile". At most airports, your surfboard will arrive at the oversize luggage carousel, rather than the normal luggage carousel with suitcases.

United Airlines United Airlines Surfboards Policy United accepts surfboards, wakeboards and paddleboards checked as special items as long as they are packed in appropriate board bags and do not weigh more than 99.9 pounds (45.3 kg). United has removed their $150 flat service charge for a surfboard, but will charge all oversize/overweight/excess baggage fees for a board bag. This could quickly add up to more than their previous fee, as an oversize bag fee could easily be $200+, depending on destination, with an additional $100-$200+ overweight fee if exceeding 23 kg / 50 lbs. If flying with a surfboard, we recommend looking to book a flight with a different airline such as Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, or Delta, the exception being on flights to/from California. Surfboards fly FREE to/from California To celebrate surfing as the state sport of California, oversize baggage charges for surfboards, wakeboards and paddleboards will be waived for all customers traveling to and from California. According to Virgin Atlantic's website, your board can't be larger than dimensions of 190cm x 75cm x 65cm (75" x 30" x 26") and 23kg in weight, meaning only boards under 6'3" are officially accepted. This means that your mid-length, funboard, or long board do not fit within the dimensions unfortunately. If your surf board does fit within the dimensions, your surfboard bag can be brought in place of a regular suitcase as part of your free checked baggage allowance, or upon payment of the standard Extra Bag fee as if it were an extra suitcase. The weight limit is 23 kg / 50 lbs, otherwise an Overweight Baggage fee of 65 GBP / $100 USD will be charged. Previously Virgin Atlantic accepted surfboards up to a maximum length of 277 cm (9 feet), but this is no longer the case unfortunately.

You will be charged a higher fee if paying for your surfboard bag at the airport. Remember that in order to travel, your surfboard must be correctly packed, labelled and protected so that it can be carried safely. A surfboard bag is considered Special Luggage, so it cannot be included in your regular checked baggage allowance. You will have to add your surfboard bag as a piece of Special Luggage by selecting "Surfboard" from the Special Luggage dropdown, either when making your original booking or by adding it to your reservation via the Vueling website or app later on. Westjet is known to be a customer-friendly airline and surfboards are sometimes accepted for just the standard checked bag fee plus the $50 surfboard handling fee, but according to their policies all standard Oversize and Overweight luggage fees also apply, so bringing your surfboard may end up costing you up to $250 + the standard checked luggage fee applicable to your flight. Westjet's standard checked baggage or extra piece fees apply, plus all applicable oversize ($100) and overweight ($100) fees (these fees are cumulative, both will be charged if both oversize AND overweight), and an additional flat handling fee of $50 CAD/USD will be applied to surfboards, paddleboards, kiteboards, wakeboards and wave skis, boogie/skimboards and windsurfers.
