Alaska Airlines Car Seat and Stroller Policy

Bringing a Car Seat on Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines allows you to check-in a car seat free of charge for all children under 13 years of age.  Your car seat will not count toward your checked baggage allowance, whether your baby is flying as a lap infant on a parent's lap, or in their own assigned seat.

You may check-in the car seat at the check-in desk together with your suitcases, or bring the car seat through security and "gate-check" it when boarding the flight. [AMZ asins='B000RRD7UG,B06XTT17QC,B0009RNXNA,B084RB2WN9']

We recommend always bringing your car seat to the boarding gate, to minimize the chance it gets lost in transit if going through the checked baggage sorting system.

If your child has their own assigned seat, they may sit in their car seat on the plane as long as the car seat meets the FAA's certification and labeling requirements for being safe to use on an airplane.  Most car seats meet these requirements, but not all, so be sure to check whether your car seat is certified for use an airplane.  Your car seat must be labeled as both "This restraint system conforms to all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards", and "This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft" (in red lettering).   If not, your child will not be allowed to sit in their car seat during the flight.

When flying with a lap infant, they will not have their own assigned seat, so their car seat will have to be checked-in.  Even so, we recommend bringing the car seat through security and to the boarding gate, as your baby may be allowed to use their car seat if there is an empty seat available on the plane, even when flying as a lap infant.  The car seat will still need to meet the FAA's labeling requirements as being certified for aircraft use.

Protecting your Car Seat on Alaska Airlines

When dropping off your car seat, either at the boarding gate or at the check-in desk, we recommend protecting the car seat with a protective travel cover that will keep it from getting stained, torn, or damaged.  Most lightweight car seat travel covers will suffice for this purpose, especially when gate-checking the car seat.

Many car seat travel covers are brightly colored so that gate-staff and baggage handlers will see it easily, helping that your car seat doesn't get lost or left behind at the gate.

Bringing a Stroller on Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines accepts a baby stroller to be checked-in free of charge when flying with a child.  You may choose to either drop-off the stroller at the check-in desk when dropping off your suitcases, or to use your stroller when making your way through the airport, and "gate-checking" it when boarding the aircraft.
