When planning on taking your kitesurfing gear with you, make sure the airline you are flying with will accept your kiteboard and kites as checked luggage.
Even though kites pack up quite small, and kiteboards are typically the same size as wakeboards and small surfboards, some airlines will charge an excessive amount for taking your gear on your flight.
Look for airlines that will accept your kitesurf gear for free, in place of one of your checked bags, or for just a small fee. Another option is to pack your kites and lines into your regular suitcase, and simply rent a board at your destination.
If bringing your kiteboard with you on an airline that charges an excessive amount for kitesurfing gear, you could pack your kites into your suitcase, and claim the board as a surfboard, wakeboard, or snowboard (depending on your destination) to pay a lower fee.
Some travelers have had success avoiding airline fees by packing their kitesurfing gear into kiteboarding travel bags labeled as golf equipment, as many airlines accept golf equipment for free or at a reduced rate. Keep in mind that some airlines are catching on to this, so you may have some difficulty passing it off as golf clubs. Some people recommend to pack to pack a golf club or two into your bag bag, to be able to prove that it is in fact golf equipment in the bag.

If your kitesurf bag weighs more than 20 kg / 44 lbs (up to 30 kg / 66 lbs), we recommend registering it as Windsurfing equipment - it is the same fee of $230/$250 for a windsurfing bag, with the same dimensions, but a higher weight limit of 30 kg / 66 lbs. Otherwise, excess weight is charged at a rate of $11-$12 per KG on short-haul flights, $17-$19 per KG on long-haul flights, or a $50 flat fee (max 10 KG / 22 lbs) on flights to/from USA. Be sure to register your kitesurfing equipment as early as possible under "My Reservation" on the Neos website, as only 10 pieces of kitesurfing equipment (or 5 pieces of windsurfing equipment) are allowed per flight. All applicable oversized, overweight and extra piece fees apply. These tend to be about $100 for each fee, and are combinable. Please note that Westjet has also introduced a special handling fee of $50 CAD/USD this is applied to surfboards, paddleboards, kiteboards, wakeboards and wave skis, boogie/skimboards and windsurfers. This handling fee is in addition to any other standard fees that apply to your kitesurfing gear. WestJet does not charge the Oversized Baggage fee nor special Handling Fee for flying with golf equipment, so it could be worth looking into a "Kitesurfing Golf Bag" to pass off your kiteboarding gear as golf equipment, however you run the risk that you may be asked to open the bag for inspection at check-in.
