Flying with a Wedding Dress on United Airlines
Bringing a Wedding Dress in the Cabin on United Airlines
United Airlines does not have a specific wedding dress policy. You should be able to bring a wedding dress on-board, either folded and packed into your standard carry-on bag (maximum size 22 x 14 x 9 inches), or in a garment bag in place of your standard carry-on item - keep in mind that Basic Economy tickets on United Airlines do not have a carry-on allowance, so you will not be able to bring your wedding dress into the cabin with a Basic Economy ticket.
When boarding the flight, you can ask that the flight attendant place your wedding dress into an on-board closet near the front of the plane, if space allows. If your dress cannot be hung in the closet, it is best to lay your dress flat in the overhead compartment, plaing it on top of the suitcases as the last item in the locker, so as not to get crushed by other suitcases. If not folded into a carry-on suitcase, be sure to pack your wedding dress into an appropriate travel-specific garment bag to protect it as much as possible, preferrably one that can be lightly rolled old tri-folded if necessary.

Alternatively, it is possible to purchcase an additional seat with United Airlines to bring fragile items such as larger/fuller wedding gowns - this is known as "Cabin Seat Baggage".
We do NOT recommend packing your wedding dress into your checked bags - although most bags arrive at their destination, the last thing you want is for your wedding dress to get lost in transit before your big day. Be sure to bring it into the cabin with you, along with shoes, jewellery, and any other essential accessories that you cannot risk going without.
Bringing a Fabric Steamer on United Airlines
No matter how you transport your wedding dress on an airplane, it is bound to arrive wrinkled. Either arrange with a trusted dry-cleaner at your destination to get your dress pressed professionally before your big day, or bring a steamer with you to remove the wrinkles once you arrive. You can pack a steamer into your carry-on bag as long as you have removed any liquid inside, otherwise you will not be able to bring it with you through security. You can also pack a steamer into your standard checked baggage.
Flying with a Bridesmaid Dress on United Airlines
You can bring a bridesmaid dress in a garment bag in place of your regular carry-on baggage allowance on United Airlines, or packed into your standard carry-on suitcase. It is recommended to pack your shoes and jewellery into your carry-on as well - do not pack the wedding essentials into a checked suitcase, just in case it gets lost in transit. Remember that United's Basic Economy tickets do not include a carry-on baggage allowance, so you will not be able to bring your dress with you into the cabin if flying Basic Economy.
