United Airlines Car Seat and Stroller Policy

Flying with a Car Seat on United Airlines

United Airlines allows you to bring a car seat for your child, either as a piece of checked luggage (free of charge, in addition to your regular checked baggage allowance) or into the cabin.  You may only bring a car seat into the cabin if your child has their own assigned seat, meaning they are older than 2 years old with their own ticket, or younger than 2 years old with their own ticket (not flying on your lap). The car seat must be an FAA-approved car seat that meet's the requiremetns and safety certifications for airline travel, including the necessary labeling requirements.

In order to be used on board, your child's car seat must be labeled as "This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft".  Most, but unfortunately not all, car seats meet the FAA's aircraft safety requirements, so be sure to check that your child's car seat is safe and allowed to be used on your flight. If not bring a car seat into the cabin, we recommend bringing it with you through security yourself, and "gate-checking" the car seat when boarding the flight. This will minimize the risk of damage while in transit, as well as lessen the chance of your car seat getting lost in transit.  We suggest placing the car seat and stroller in "gate-check" protective covers/bags to keep them from getting dirty, stained, or torn while they are being handled by the baggage handlers at the gate. Many of these covers for child car seats and strollers are brightly colored so that the baggage handler at the airport can see them and make sure they don't get lost.

Bringing a Stroller on United Airlines

United Airlines allows you to bring a stroller for your child free of charge, in addition to your standard checked baggage allowance.

If you have a small foldable stroller, such as the GB Pockit, you may be able to bring it with you onboard into the cabin.  Otherwise, your child's stroller will have to be gate-checked when boarding the plane, or you can also choose to check-in your stroller free of charge at the ticket counter when dropping off your regular suitcases.  Larger strollers, or strollers that do not collapse, cannot be gate-checked and must be dropped off at the check-in counter.
