Bringing a Wedding Dress into the Cabin on American Airlines
American Airlines will accept your wedding dress as your carry-on bag - you can either pack it into a standard carry-on suitcase (max size 22 x 14 x 9 inches), or carry it in a soft-sided garment bag that is no longer than 51 inches (130 cm). Your wedding dress will typically be longer than this garment bag limit, so be sure to pack into a garment bag that can be folded in half to stay within the limit.
When boarding the plane, you can ask a flight attendant to hang your wedding dress in a special jacket closet that is typically located at the front of the plane - this closet is typically reserved for First Class passengers, but most American Airlines flight attendants will be happy to hang your dress for you if space permits.

If you have packed your dress into a garment bag and it cannot be hung in the First Class closet space, your best option is to lay your wedding dress out flat in the overhead locker on top of the carry on suitcases, as the last item to be placed into the overhead bin. Do not lay your dress flat in the locker as the first time, as other passengers will insist on placing their bags into the locker and crush your dress.
Be sure to always bring your wedding dress, along with shoes, jewellery and other wedding day essentials, with you as your carry-on item - do not pack your dress into a checked suitcase, just in case it gets lost in transit before your wedding day. Fortunately American Airlines has reverted its Basic Economy carry-on bag policy that now all passengers may bring a carry-on item (in this case your wedding dress) in addition to a personal item, even for Basic Economy passengers.
Flying with a Clothes Steamer on American Airlines
Your dress will arrive wrinkled, so it is a good idea to pack a steamer to get out the wrinkles once you arrive at your destination. You can pack this steamer either into your carry-on bag with American Airlines (make sure there is no liquid left inside, otherwise it will not be allowed through the TSA Security checkpoint), or into your standard checked luggage suitcase.
Flying with a Bridesmaid Dress on American Airlines
You can fly with a bridesmaid's dress on American Airlines by packing it into a soft-sided travel garment bag (max length 51 inches / 130 cm), or folded into a standard carry-on suitcase (maximum dimensions 22 x 14 x 9 inches). Be sure to bring your dress as your carry-on item, and not packed into your checked luggage, to make sure it doesn't get lost before the big day.
