Flying with a Wedding Dress on Southwest

Bring your Wedding Dress as Carry-On with Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines recommends that you bring your wedding dress into the cabin on your flight, and not in a checked bag.  It is not recommended to pack your wedding dress into a checked suitcase, so that it doesn't get lost before your big day. Be sure to also bring your shoes, jewellery, and other wedding day essentials in your carry-on, and not in your checked suitcase.

Your wedding dress can be folded and packed into your carry-on suitcase which must be no larger than 24 x 16 x 10 inches, or packed into a garment bag that can be gently rolled or tri-folded to fit these dimensions.  When bringing your dress in a garment bag, you may be able to lay it over other suitcases in the overhead bin - be sure not to place it as the first item in the overhead locker, so that it doesn't get crushed by other passengers fitting their suitcases into the overhead bins. Southwest Airlines does NOT have a closet to hang your wedding dress.

You can purchase an additional seat on Southwest Airlines to bring your wedding dress, but as seats are not assigned, it is not possible to "reserve" the seat beside you.  Some customers have complained about poor experiences purchasing an additional seat on Southwest for their wedding dress, and have had to place the dress into the overhead bin even after having purchased an etra seat.

Packing a Steamer on Southwest Airlines

Your dress is bound to have some wrinkles after your trip, so it is best to steam it once you arrive at your destination.  You can pack a steamer into either your carry-on baggage or your checked luggage - just be sure there is not liquid in the steamer if bringing in your carry-on, as otherwise it will not be allowed through the TSA Security checkpoint.

Flying with a Bridesmaid Dress on Southwest Airlines

Similar to flying with a wedding gown, you can bring your bridesmaid dress into the cabin of the aircraft by packing it into your standard carry-on suitcase (max size 24 x 16 x 10 inches), or into a travel garment bag that you can attempt to lay on top of the suitcases in the overhead locker.  Again, it is recommended to bring the bridesmaid dress as a carry-on item so that it doesn't get lost in transit, and not packed into your checked luggage.
