American Airlines Firearms Policy 2024: Flying with Guns, Firearms, and Ammo Guide

Traveling with Firearms and Ammunition on American Airlines

Guns are not allowed on board the aircraft or as carry-on baggage. Within the U.S., you can only travel with firearms and ammunition, including pellet and BB guns, in your checked bags if you’re over 18 years old. You must check them with an American Airlines agent at check-in and declare that you’re traveling with firearms and ammunition.

All firearms must be unloaded, in a hard-sided case, and completely locked so the firearm is inaccessible.  Rifle cases require locks on each end.   [AMZ asins='B07B7ZB484,B09FS5JJM3,B094WBMGRM,B0001HCBOU']

Ammunition on American Airlines

All ammunition must be packed the same way as guns (locked, hard-sided case), and ammunition must be in a sturdy box - either in it's original packaging or in a wood, metal, or fiber box specifically designed to carry ammunition.  A maximum of 11 lbs (5 kg) of ammunition is allowed per customer.

American Airlines does not accept loose ammunition, or in magazines or clips.

American Airlines Guns Baggage Allowance

American Airlines does not set a limit on how many guns you may pack, or on packing multiple guns into the same case. You are limited to a maximum of 5 kg / 11 lbs of ammunition per customer.  All standard checked baggage and any applicable oversize/overweight fees will be charged for your gun, rifle, or pistol case.
