Flying with Babies and Kids on Delta Airlines

Does my Child Need a Ticket to Fly on Delta Airlines?

All children flying on Delta airlines are required to have a ticket, including babies and infants under the age of 2 flying on a parent's lap.  Fear not, a ticket is required, but that does not necessarily mean that you have to purchase a full adult fare for your baby.  Your baby may fly for free or at a discounted rate, depending on your route, but in all cases your child is required to have a ticket, even if flying on your lap.

Babies Under 2 Years Old Flying on Delta Airlines

Babies and Infants under 2 years old may fly on a parent's lap, known as an "Infant in Arms" in Delta's official terminology, or in their own assigned seat with an FAA-approved car seat.  In both cases, your child will require a ticket, the cost of which depends on whether you are flying domestically within the US or on an international flight.

Babies Under 2 Years Old Fly Free on Delta Airlines - USA Domestic

Babies less than 2 years old can fly for free on a parent's lap when flying Delta Airlines within the USA.  Babies do not fly free on Delta flights outside the US. Keep in mind that your child will still need to have their own ticket, even when flying on your lap.  You can add your baby's ticket to your reservation by visiting the "My Trips" section on the Delta website.  Follow the steps below:

1. Go to "My Trips" on the Delta website
2. Go to "Special Service Requests", find the "Infant in Arms" icon, and click "Open"
3. Press the "+" button beside "Request Infant in Arms"
4. Fill out your baby's travel information
5. Click "Confirm"

Keep in mind that a maximum of 1 infant in arms is allowed per adult, so if you are travelling alone with two or more children under the age of 2, only one of your babies can fly in your arms for free, and the other will be required to have their own assigned seat and fly in a car seat.

If you prefer your baby travel in their own seat, you will need to purchase a ticket for your baby.  In most cases, you will be required to purchase a full adult-fare ticket for your baby to fly in their own seat.  You will  be responsible for providing an FAA-Approved car seat for your child to travel in - most car seats are approved for use in the aircraft, but not all.  Be sure that your car seat is labeled "This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft".

Babies Under 2 Years Old on Delta Airlines - International Flights

Your baby can fly on your lap if under 2 years old on Delta's international flights, but will need to have their own ticket. Delta offers discounted tickets for a "Baby in Arms" on international flights, typically charging 10% of the adult fare. Keep in mind that country-specific taxes and fees may still apply to your baby, even if flying on your lap.

If you prefer, you can purchase a separate ticket for your baby to fly in their own seat - in most cases this will require you purchase a full adult-fare ticket.  When purchasing a ticket for your baby to fly internationally, Delta offers discounts on some country-specific routes, but not always.

If your baby is flying in their own assigned seat, you will be required to provide a government-approved car seat.  Your child's car seat must bear a label that states "This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft", meaning it is FAA-approved for a baby to fly in.

Minimum and Maximum Age to Fly on Lap on Delta Airlines

Your baby may only fly on your lap if they are less than 2 years old at the time of travel.  If your baby turns 2 years old during your trip, they will be required to fly in their own seat on the return portion of your flight - please contact Delta Airlines directly to arrange a ticket for your child's return flight if this is your case.

All babies must be at least 7 days old to fly on Delta Airlines.  If you do need to fly with your baby that is younger than 7 days, you will need to provide a letter of approval from a doctor giving your baby permission to fly.

You may be asked to provide proof-of-age of your child when flying with an infant-in-arms.

Baby Bassinets on Delta Airlines

Delta Airlines offers baby bassinets free of charge on some international flights for babies flying as "Infants in Arms".  Please keep in mind that these "SkyCots" are only available on some flights, so you are not guaranteed that baby bassinets will be available on your trip.

Please contact Delta's Reservations department ahead of time to request a bassinet for your baby.  Be sure to do this as early as possible, as there is a limit of only 2 SkyCots per flight.

Discounted Tickets for Children On Delta Airlines

Children aged 2-14 years old are required to fly in their own seat on Delta Airlines, and cannot fly on a parent's lap.  All children are required to have their own ticket.

In most cases, you will be required to purchase a full adult-fare ticket for all children to fly on Delta Airlines. Some country-specific discounts may apply, depending your route.

Delta Airlines Family Seating Policy

You may request to be seated together as a family when travelling with children.  You can select seats for all members of your family to be seated close to each other - please note that depending on your fare type, seat selection fees may apply.  If you cannot select seats close together, please contact Delta's Reservations department to request that you and your children get seated together.

Breastfeeding on Delta Airlines

Breastfeeding is allowed on all Delta and Delta Connection flights, as well as the use of breast pumps.
