Packing Firearms on Delta Airlines

Firearms are ONLY allowed as Checked Baggage on Delta Airlines, never in your carry-on.  You must declare your firearm to the check-in agent upon arrival at the airport. Customers must be 18 years of age or older to transport a firearm.

Firearms must be packed in a locked manufacturer's hard-sided container specifically designed for the firearm, a locked hard–sided gun case or a locked hard-sided piece of luggage. Handguns may be packed in a locked hard-sided gun case, and then packed inside an unlocked soft-sided piece of luggage. You are responsible for knowledge of and compliance with all Federal, State or local laws regarding the possession and transportation of firearms.

All firearms checked as baggage must be picked up at the Baggage Service Office upon arrival at your final destination. ID will be required to claim your checked firearm

Ammunition on Delta Airlines

Ammunition is allowed in checked baggage only - never in carry-on. Delta Airlines limits small-arms ammunition to a strict 11 lbs / 5 kg per customer, inline with TSA guidelines.  Multiple allowances from multiple passengers CANNOT be combined into one case - ammunition must be packed separately for every passenger.  No loose ammunition will be accepted, ammunition must be packed in a secure case as per TSA requirements. 

Gunpowder (e.g., Pyrodex, black powder, mace, pepper spray and tear gas) is never permitted, neither as carry-on nor checked baggage.

Packing Pistols on Delta Airlines

Pistols and accessories must be included in one case and may contain:

Pistol telescopes
Noise suppressors
A small pistol tool case
Up to 5 handguns may be packed into one case
No more than 11 lbs. (5 kg) of ammunition, including case

Packing Rifles and Shotguns on Delta Airlines

Delta will accept for transport One hard sided case containing up to four rifles, shotguns, shooting materials, and tools.

The rifle case must be secured completely to keep the firearm from being accessed. All areas designed to be locked must be locked - no designed locking point may be left unlocked.

Locked cases that can be easily opened are not permitted. Be aware that the container the firearm was in when purchased may not adequately secure the firearm when it is transported in checked baggage.

Delta Airlines Baggage Fees for Checking in Guns/Firearms/Rifles

Delta Airlines considers your gun case as an item of Sporting Equipment. As such, standard checked baggage fees may apply, based on the cabin in which you are flying.  Keep in mind, you firearm can ONLY travel as a checked bag, never in your carry-on.  

Overweight baggage fees apply to gun cases that exceed 50 lbs.  An excess baggage fee will apply if checking more than one gun case. Items in excess of the baggage allowance will be subject to additional, overweight, and oversized baggage fees.
