Spirit Airlines Car Seat and Stroller Policy

Flying with a Car Seat on Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines allows you to check-in a car seat free of charge, either at the check-in desk or at the boarding gate when getting onto the airplane.  Your child's car seat will not count toward your checked baggage limit.

We recommend gate-checking your child's car seat when boarding the plane, as this minimizes the chances of your child's car seat getting lost in transit, or damaged when going through the baggage handling system at the airport.  We also recommend placing the car seat in a "gate-check" travel cover to keep it from getting stained, torn, or damaged when being placed into the cargo hold. The bright colors also catch the baggage handler's eye, so that it doesn't get left behind on the jetbridge or in the cargo hold. [AMZ asins='B000RRD7UG,B06XTT17QC,B0009RNXNA,B084RB2WN9']

Using Your Child's Car Seat on the Plane

If you would like your child use their car seat on the plane (the safest way for a baby to fly), your child will have to have their own assigned seat, meaning you will have needed to purchase a seat for your child. In addition, your child's car seat must meet the FAA's certification requirements that it is safe to use on an aircraft, and must be labeled as such. Look for a label that says "This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft".  Most, but unfortunately not all, car seats are certified for aircraft use, to be sure to check ahead of time that your child's car seat meets these requirements.

Bringing a Stroller on Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines allows you to check-in your child's stroller free of charge, either dropping it off at the check-in desk like a regular suitcase, or bringing it through security and "gate-checking" your stroller when boarding the plane.

We recommend gate-checking your stroller, as it minimizes the risk of damage to the stroller, as well as lessens the chance of the stroller getting lost in transit. It is recommended to pack your stroller into a protective cover to keep it from getting damaged when being moved around by the baggage handlers.

Bringing Cribs and Playpens on Spirit Airlines

Pack and Plays, Cribs, and Play Pens are not classified as Transportation Devices, so Spirit Airlines will not accept these free of charge when flying with your child.  If you do wish to bring them with you, they will have to be checked-in together with your regular luggage, and all standard Spirit Airlines checked baggage fees will apply.
