Hawaiian Airlines Car Seat and Stroller Policy

Bringing a Child Car Seat on Hawaiian Airlines

All children flying with Hawaiian Airlines, whether flying on an adult's lap or with their own assigned seat, may bring a child car seat with them on the trip, free of charge.

You may choose to check-in your child's car seat free of charge, or your child may use it in flight as long as meets the labeling requirements and your child is flying in their own assigned seat.  Please keep in mind that lap infants (children less than 2 years old flying on an adult's lap) do not have their own assigned seat, and will not be able to use their car seat in flight unless there happens to be an extra seat available on your flight. Child Car Seat Labeling Requirements on Hawaiian Airlines

You must ensure that your child's car seat meets the government safety standards and is certified by the FAA for use in aircraft, otherwise it will not allowed to be used during your flight.  Your car seat must bear a label that reads "This child restraint system conforms to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety standards" AND "This restraint is certified for use in Motor Vehicles and Aircraft".  The gate agents will check for these labels on your car seat before being allowed to be brought onto the plane.

If your car seat not certified in the USA, it may still be allowed to be used as long as it has an approved label from the United Nations or any foreign government, which is a circle surround the letter "E" with the distinguishing number of the country where it is certified and approved, as well as the category and mass number for the car seat.

Safety seats that do not have a label stating certification for use in aircraft, or seats manufactured before January 1, 1981, are not acceptable for use in-flight.

Child booster seats or other types of child restraints, regardless of stamp/seals of approval the devices carry, may not be used during take-off, landing and surface movements.

Checking-In a Car Seat for Free on Hawaiian Airlines

If you choose to check-in your child's car seat, you may do so free of charge by dropping it off at the check-in counter together with your regular suitcase, or bring it with you to the boarding gate and "gate-check" the car seat when entering the aircraft.  This is complimentary with Hawaiian Airlines, and you will not be charged.  Your child's car seat does not count toward your or your child's baggage allowance, and will not incur any fees.

If you child is flying in their own assigned seat, meaning that they have a purchased ticket with their own seat, they may bring their car seat into the aircraft to use during the flight.  This is the safest way for a child to fly.  If your baby is flying on your lap, they will not have their own assigned seat and will not be able to use their car seat in flight.  The only way to guarantee that your baby will be able to use a car seat is by purchasing an individual ticket for your baby.

If checking-in your child's car seat, we recommend bringing your car seat with you to the boarding gate, rather than dropping it off at the check-in desk, as this minimizes the chance of your car seat getting lost or damaged in transit.  When flying with a lap infant, you may be allowed to bring the car seat onto the plane for your baby to use if there happens to be an empty seat available on your flight.

We recommend using a brightly-colored car seat protective cover to keep the car seat from getting stained, damaged, or torn when being placed into the hold, and to the catch the eye of the baggage handlers so it is not left-behind or forgotten at the boarding gate.

Flying with a Stroller on Hawaiian Airlines

Hawaiian Airlines allows a child's stroller to be checked-in free of charge, either at the regular check-in desk together with your regular suitcases, or you may choose to use the stroller to make your way through the airport and drop it off at the boarding-gate when entering the plane.

If your stroller is non-collapsible or weights more than 50 lbs / 23 kg, it must be checked-in.

We recommend placing your stroller in a protective covering to keep it from getting scraped or damaged in transit, such as getting wheels or handles caught in the baggage handling system at the airport.

Child Wagons on Hawaiian Airlines

Wagons are accepted as checked baggage on Hawaiian Airlines, but they will be treated as a regular piece of checked baggage, and may incur standard checked baggage and excess baggage fees.  Wagons used to transport children ARE NOT considered strollers by Hawaiian Airlines, and may not be substituted for a stroller to be brought free of charge.
