Babies Under 2 Fly Free on Air Canada

Babies Under 2 Years Old Fly Free on Air Canada Domestic Flights

Infants less than 2 years old can fly free of charge on Air Canada domestic flights within Canada when seated on a parent's or adult's lap - this is known as an "infant on lap".  Your child will have to fly on your lap for the duration of the flight, and must be secured in the parent's arms for take-off, turbulence, and landing. Your baby will not have their own assigned seat, meaning you will not be able to use a child restraint device (child car seat) on the flight.  If you prefer to use an approved child car seat during the flight, you must purchase a regular adult fare for your baby.

Babies Under 2 Years Old Pay Taxes on Air Canada Flights to/from USA

When flying between Canada and the USA, infants and babies younger than 2 years old may fly free of charge on a parent's lap, but you must still pay the required taxes and fees for your baby's ticket.  You may also choose for your child to fly in their own seat, using a government-approved child restraint device (approved child car seat), by purchasing a regular adult fare for your baby. Babies Under 2 Years Old on Air Canada International Flights

Your baby may fly on your lap on Air Canada international flights for a fee of 10% of the adult fare - please note that this discounted rate applies only to the fare portion of the ticket, and not to any taxes, fees, charges, or surcharges. This is the rate that is charged for your baby to fly on your lap, not for their own seat.  If you would like for your baby to fly in their own seat, Air Canada offers discounted child fares on international flights for all children less than 12 years old (including for infants less than 2 years old).

Adding an "Infant on Lap" to your Air Canada Reservation

To add an "Infant on Lap" to your reservation, you may do so when making your booking via Air Canada's website when starting your search, or by adding an "Infant on Lap" to your reservation via the Manage my Reservation section of the website.  Keep in mind that a maximum of 1 infant on lap is allowed per adult passenger - if you are flying with 2 or more infants and only 1 adult, the 2nd infant must fly in their own purchased seat with an approved child car seat.

Minimum Age for Baby to Fly on Air Canada

All babies must be a minimum of 7 days old in order to be allowed to fly on Air Canada flights.

Infant on Lap Age Limit on Air Canada Flights

Only babies less than 2 years old are allowed to fly on a parent's or adult's lap - all children that have reached their 2nd birthday must fly in their own assigned seat, meaning that they must have their purchased ticket for the flight.  If your baby turns 2 years old while away on your trip, they may fly on the parent's lap for the outbound flight, but must have their own seat/ticket for the return portion of the flight.  If this is the case, you make this type of reservation by contacting Air Canada Reservations department by phone, as these types of tickets are not available online.

Infant on Lap Baggage Allowance on Air Canada Flights

If your infant is flying on your lap, you will be allowed to bring 1 extra standard-sized carry-on item with your child's belongings into the cabin. Your infant is not eligible for their own carry-on baggage allowance when flying on a parent's lap, however they are eligible for their own checked baggage allowance equivalent to the parent's checked baggage allowance's fare class.

Discounted Child Fares on Air Canada

Air Canada offers discounted children's fares for children younger less than 12 years old (If your child is 12 years old, a regular adult ticket is required) on International flights.  These discounted children's fares are not available on Air Canada Domestic flights within Canada, or on Air Canada flights between Canada and the USA - a regular full adult fare must be purchased for children less than 12 years old when flying within Canada or to/from the USA.  You may purchase discounted child fares via the Air Canada website.
