Air Transat Car Seat and Stroller Policy

Can I Bring a Car Seat on Air Transat?

If your child is flying on Air Transat (whether between 0-2 years old, or between 2-12 years old) and they have their own assigned seat, you are responsible for providing a Transport Canada approved car seat that is approved for Air Transportation.  Air Transat does NOT provide car seats.

All car seats that will be used on Air Transat flights must meet one of the following labeling requirements: [AMZ asins='B000RRD7UG,B06XTT17QC,B0009RNXNA,B084RB2WN9']

Canada – manufactured after January 1, 1981, and labeled “CMVSS 213 or 213.1 Canada.”

U.S.A. – manufactured after February 26, 1985, and labeled: “This child restraint system conforms to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards” or “This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft.”

Europe – manufactured to the UN ECE standard and labeled: an international approval label consisting of a circle surrounding the letter “E” followed by the distinguishing number of the country that has granted approval (reflects UN standard ECE R 44, revision 03 or later), and second label that states it is approved for use in aircraft.

Car seats manufactured in any other country are not approved for use on Air Transat flights.

When making your reservation, keep in mind that rear-facing car seats are typically placed in a window seat, and there are also other restrictions on which seats a carseat may be installed.

Your child must be seated and buckled into the car seat appropriately using the car seat's installed internal harness system. All car seats must be used under the restrictions and guidelines laid out by the manufacturer.

Bringing a Car Seat on Air Transat for Babies Under 2 Years Old

If you are flying with an infant under 2 years of age that is flying on your lap (your baby does not have their own assigned seat), Air Transat allows you to bring your child's car seat as a piece of checked luggage, free of charge.  You can either check-in your baby's car seat at the regular check-in desk when dropping off your suitcases, or bring the car seat to the gate and "gate-check" your child's car seat right before boarding the plane, along with your child's stroller.

We often recommend gate-checking your baby's car seat to minimize the abuse it takes through the baggage sorting systems in the airports, and to minimize the chance of your child's car seat getting lost in transit.  Depending on whether there are empty seats available on the plane, when boarding, Air Transat may allow you to bring the aviation-approved car seat into the plane for your child to use if you have it with you at the gate.  Please keep in mind that this is not a given - the only way to guarantee your baby fly in their car seat (the safest way for a child to fly) is to purchase a separate seat for your baby, which ensures that there will be space to bring the car seat into the plane.

Protecting Your Car Seat on Air Transat Flights

To best protect your car seat when flying on Air Transat, we recommend bringing your baby's car seat through security and "gate-checking" it when boarding the plane.  This minimizes the chance of it getting lost or damaged while in transit through the airport.

When gate-checking your car seat, we recommend protecting in a protective travel cover to prevent your car seat from getting stained, torn, damaged, or lost.  Many car seat travel covers are brightly coloured, to catch the eye of the baggage handlers to minimize the chances for your car seat getting lost in transit.

Bringing a Baby Stroller on Air Transat Flights

You may check-in your child's stroller as a piece of checked luggage free of charge when flying on Air Transat.  You can either check-in the stroller at the check-in desk while dropping off with your suitcases, or if you prefer you can use the stroller at the airport, bring it through security, and "gate-check" your stroller when boarding the plane.

Air Transat allows you to bring 2 pieces of baby equipment free of charge in addition to your standard checked luggage allowance, meaning you can bring both a car-seat and a stroller for free.  Extra items such as playpens and cribs will count toward your checked-luggage allowance and may be charged extra
