The applicable charge for baggage weight in excess of the free baggage allowance varies for each sector except for travel to/from the USA/Canada where the piece system shall apply.

For travelers to US and Canada

USD150.00 and USD210.00 will apply for each additional piece (bag) weighing up to 23 kgs (50Lbs) and 24 kgs up to 32 kgs (51-70Lbs) respectively on the sectors Addis Ababa to Washington D.C or vice versa.

Between USD150.00 and USD200.00 and between USD210.00 and USD260.00 will apply for each additional piece (bag) weighing up to 23 kgs (50Lbs) and 24 kgs up to 32 kgs (51-70Lbs) respectively on the sector from Washington D.C. to any other destination other than Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines' route network. Please note that the rate varies based on the destination.

USD200.00 shall apply for each additional piece (bag) weighing 23 kgs (50Lbs) on the sector Addis Ababa to a destination beyond Washington D.C. within the US.

For passengers originating from USA, outside Washington D.C the excess baggage rate from origin up to Washington D.C is determined by the carrier you are using and the origin you are departing from.

In Economy Class, when the number of pieces is within the free baggage allowance while the weight of the bags is over 23 kgs but less than 32 kgs (51 - 70Lbs) the excess baggage charge will be USD60.00 per each bag.

Sporting Equipment and Bulky Baggage
One set of skiing equipment (one pair of skis, one pair of ski poles and/or one pair of boots) will be charged at the applicable rate for three (3) kilograms of excess baggage. If you carry more than one set, the normal excess baggage charge shall apply for the extra weight.

One set of golfing equipment (one golf bag and one pair of golf shoes) will be charged at the applicable rate for six (6) kilograms of excess baggage. If weight of golfing equipment exceeds 15 kg the normal excess charge shall apply.

If you take along particularly bulky or damageable baggage (bicycles, surf and snowboards, skis, large musical instruments, wardrobe trunks etc.) you may have to pay an additional fee and register your baggage with us prior to your departure.

Excess baggage charges must be assessed and paid for before boarding.

Government Excess Baggage Authorization (GEBA) - if you are traveling under the auspices of any Government you can use GEBA to pay for excess baggage.

Baggage Excess Value Charge
If you want to declare the value of checked baggage, the valuation charge shall be assessed at 0.50 United States Dollars for each 100, - United States Dollars or portion thereof.
Acceptance of value declared baggage for carriage shall be limited to Ethiopian destinations only.

Especially large and heavy pieces of baggage
Baggage will be accepted for check-in, only if it properly contains and prevents damage to the contents. Light cardboard boxes, paper bags and similar non-durable materials are not acceptable. If the passenger so insists, it shall be accepted upon using Limited Release Tags, relieving Ethiopian from any damage claim.
Acceptance of items which may cause damage to other baggage will be refused unless properly packed.
Extremely bulky and oversized bags shall be forwarded by freight.

Transportation of pushchairs, wheelchairs or walking aids
Special equipment required by incapacitated passengers with the passenger, and/or should be readily and immediately attainable at transfer and destination points.
Passengers traveling with their own folding wheelchair or assistive device may request it to be carried in the passenger cabin where storage facilities are available. Such request will be handled on a 'first come first served' basis. Where such facilities do not exist, the wheelchair or assistive device will be loaded in the baggage hold where it is easily accessible for timely return to the passenger.
If crutches, canes and similar walking aids are stored in a special location in the cabin, the user of such aids should be assigned seats nearby, to permit quick access to the aids when needed.
