Spirit Airlines Carry-On Allowance 2014 ↑ Back to Top

Carry-On Summary

Spirit Airlines charges a fee for bringing a carry-on bag with you. This fee ranges from $20-$50, and will increase as of November 2012. If planning to bring a carry-on, it is recommended to purchase ahead of time online, which is cheaper than paying at the airport or through their call-centre.

You are allowed to bring one "personal item", such as a small backpack or briefcase, but it is limited in size to 16x14x12 inches, and you will have to keep it under your feet (not overhead bins). If larger than that, they'll usually make you pay.

Be sure to check their full policy and fee schedule for the most up-to-date fees, which are set to increase in November 2012.

Be sure to consult TSA Carry-On Regulations and Carry-On Liquid Restrictions before your trip.

Checked Baggage Summary

Checked baggage fees range from $18-45 for the first bag, depending on whether it is a domestic or international flight, and how it is purchased.

The cheapest option is to buy your checked baggage vouchers online, where you get the cheapest price. You can also buy through the Spirit Airlines call center/reservations hotline, but it will cost more than buying online.

The most expensive is showing up with a checked bag at the airport without pre-purchasing. This will cost almost double the price than when purchasing online.

Important: Spirit Airlines considers a regular checked bag to weigh less than 18kg/40lbs, as opposed to the standard 23kg/50lbs limit. Be careful when packing your bags, otherwise you will also be charged additional overweight fees.

Spirit Airlines Oversize/Overweight Baggage Fees 2014 ↑ Back to Top

Excess/Oversize/Overweight Summary

Bags are considered overweight by Spirit Airlines if they weigh more than 40lbs/18kg, so be careful when packing your bags.

If you'll be flying with overweight bags, expect to pay an additional $25 if it'll weigh between 40-50lbs (18-23kg), $50 for 51-70lbs (23-32kg), or even up to $100 for bags weighing more than 70lbs.

Keep in mind that they will not accept any bags weighing more than 100lbs, so you'll be forced to re-pack into 2 separate items and be charged the appropriate fees for that as well.
