Spirit Airlines Carry-On Allowance 2018 ↑ Back to Top

Carry-On Summary

NOTE: Spirit Airlines does NOT allow a free carry-on bag!

There is a free allowance of a single "Personal Item", with maximum dimensions of 18 x 14 x 8 inches, but anything larger than that you will have to pay to bring as a carry-on.

Like with most airlines, it is cheapest to plan ahead and to purchase your carry-on allowance while purchasing your Spirit Airlines flight ticket, otherwise you will be charged ridiculous amounts for your carry-on if paying at the airport. Prices vary by destination.

Again, please pay attention to the size of your personal item! If you exceed the allowed dimensions, you may be charged up to $100 at the gate if your personal item is too big and is considered a "carry-on" item.

Spirit Airlines Checked Baggage Allowance 2018 ↑ Back to Top

Checked Baggage Summary

Checked baggage fees range from $21-45 for the first bag, depending on whether it is a domestic or international flight, and how it is purchased (online during booking, online, online checkin, on the phone, at the airport).

The cheapest option is to buy your checked baggage vouchers online, where you get the cheapest price. You can also buy through the Spirit Airlines call center/reservations hotline, but it will cost more than buying online.

The most expensive is showing up with a checked bag at the airport without pre-purchasing. This will cost almost double the price than when purchasing online.

Important: Spirit Airlines considers a regular checked bag to weigh less than 18kg/40lbs, as opposed to the standard 23kg/50lbs limit. Be careful when packing your bags, otherwise you will also be charged additional overweight fees if exceeding the 40lbs limit.

Spirit Airlines Oversize/Overweight Baggage Fees 2018 ↑ Back to Top

Excess/Oversize/Overweight Summary

Bags are considered overweight by Spirit Airlines if they weigh more than 40lbs/18kg (standard for most airlines is 50lbs/23kg), so be careful when packing your bags.

If you'll be flying with overweight bags, expect to pay an additional $30 if it'll weigh between 40-50lbs (18-23kg), $55 for 51-70lbs (23-32kg), or even up to $100 for bags weighing more than 70lbs.

Keep in mind that Spirit Airlines will not accept any bags weighing more than 100lbs, so you'll be forced to re-pack into 2 separate items and be charged additional fees for that as well.

Oversize bags will be charged $100-$150 if they are larger than 62 linear inches. Some exceptions apply to Sports Equipment.
