For your comfort and safety, we are obliged to limit the size and weight of hand baggage allowed on board. You can use the free baggage allowance calculator on TAP website to see how much free hand baggage you are allowed to take.
When checking in, ensure that it falls within the recommended limits and hand it over for labeling.
Transportation of bulky or fragile cabin baggage
Cabin baggage consists of items that passengers carry in the cabin but are not included in the free hand baggage allowance and therefore require extra seats to be reserved.
Cabin baggage may be bulky or fragile items such as works of art, musical instruments, electronic equipment, etc.
It will be accepted on the following conditions:
The pressure or weight of the cabin baggage on the seat must not exceed 84 kg (185 lbs.).
It may be necessary to reserve more than one seat for heavier or larger items. The airline will establish the number of seats.
Flying is not recommended for babies less than seven days old. In an emergency, please contact TAP so that its medical services can assess the situation.
Please make special note of the dangerous items not allowed in hand baggage. They are indicated on your ticket.
TAP Portugal has a handy calculator to calculate how much baggage is allowed on its flights. You can access it here:+ Show Full Policy
The free checked luggage allowance may be based on weight or on the number of pieces to be transported.
In accordance with international occupational health and safety standards, TAP does not transport luggage or other pieces of luggage weighing more than 32 kg.
The piece concept is based on the number of pieces of luggage that passengers are allowed to carry.
Effective 1 August, TAP has extended the number of routes covered by the piece concept to and from the following destinations:
Europe (including Morocco and Algiers)
the United States
Between Europe (except Portugal) and Angola
Whenever the journey involves one of these routes, the piece concept is applied to the entire itinerary.
Each passenger's luggage allowance depends on the total weight carried, regardless of the number of pieces.
The weight concept applies to all other routes.
NB : Weight and pieces cannot be combined.
This is luggage handed over to TAP for which a claim tag is issued.
This luggage is transported in the planeís cargo hold and, for security reasons, in the same plane in which the passenger travels.
Luggage must be properly locked and identified with the passengerís name and address to ensure safe transport.
Checked luggage must not contain:
Fragile and perishable items;
Professional or academic documents;
Passports or other identification documents;
Any valuable items (such as money, jewellery, precious metals, glasses, contact lenses, prosthesis and other orthopedic devices of any kind, personal computers or any other related equipment, cellular telephones and other personal electronic devices, negotiable papers, securities or other valuable documents).
Dangerous articles cannot be transported. These include:
Explosives, including detonators, fuses, grenades and mines;
Gases, including propane and butane gas
Flammable liquids, including petrol and methanol
Flammable solids and reactive substances, including magnesium, lighters, fireworks and torches
Oxidants and organic peroxides, including bleach and car paint touch-up kits
Toxic or infectious substances, including rat poison and infected blood
Radioactive material, including medicinal isotopes or others available on the market
Corrosive substances, including mercury and car batteries
Components of car fuel supply systems that have contained fuel
Due to TAP's complex route structure, they do not publish overweight/excess baggage fees for every flight. The easiest way is to use their Excess Baggage Fee Calculator to know how much an extra bag will cost on your flight.+ Show Full Policy
For your comfort and safety, we are obliged to limit the size and weight of baggage. If you want to take excess baggage, you need to pay extra charges. You can use the excess baggage allowance calculator on TAP website to see how much you may need to pay for your excess baggage.
Authorized extra baggage
The baggage allowance may be based on weight or the number of pieces. Victoria Gold and Silver members have different baggage allowances when flying TAP:
Gold: 1 piece, 20 kg / 44 lb.
Silver: 1 piece, 15kg / 13 lb.
Your baby can remain in the pushchair until reaching the door of the aircraft. After that we will take care of it and it will be ready and waiting for your baby when you disembark at your destination.
If you are traveling with a baby, you can request a carrycot. This service is free on TAP aircraft, with the exception of code-share flights. Many infants and small children fly without occupying a seat, i.e. they travel in a carrycot or on the lap of a parent or guardian. The airline provides carrycots for babies if their parents request one. However, the use of carrycots is subject to certain conditions:
The infant must not weigh more than 10 kg (22 lbs.)
The carrycot measures 70 cm (27.5 in) by 30 cm (12 in).
The combined weight of the baby and the carrycot must not exceed 15 kg (33 lbs.). The carrycot weighs 4.25 kg (9.3 lbs.)
There are specific seats on the aircraft for installing carrycots and their number is therefore limited. Please inform the airline of all the flights on which the infant needs a carrycot when making your booking.
The number of seats available for carrycots varies from one type of aircraft to another and if there is availability it will be confirmed immediately when you book.
Each adult may only hold one child.
