KLM Oversize/Overweight Baggage Fees 2013 ↑ Back to Top
Excess/Oversize/Overweight Summary
You will be charged excess baggage fees if you exceed the amount allowed for your ticket (typically 1 bag of 23kg). The cost for the excess baggage depends on the origin and destination of your flight, which KLM splits into 4 different "Zones". A flat fee for excess baggage is set for each "Zone".
If you know that you will be exceeding your free baggage allowance, we recommend that you go to the KLM website to pay for your extra baggage before arriving at the airport. The cost when paying online is about 20% less than the fees that will be charged at the airport.

Any baggage you wish to take with you on top of the standard amount is called excess baggage. The excess baggage fee is determined at the airport according to the number of pieces, weight and dimensions of your baggage.
For each piece of check-in baggage that weighs more, you will need to pay a fee. Any piece of baggage that weighs more than 32 kg (70.5 lbs) will have to be transported as cargo.
For KLM flights, you can arrange to take extra baggage at a discount of 20% or more:
When booking your flight at KLM.com
At Manage my Booking
When you check in online
Or you can arrange for extra baggage at the airport at the standard airport fees.
Arranging extra baggage online is possible only if your flight is operated by KLM.
Arranging extra baggage online at KLM.com is not possible if you will be departing from Australia, Cyprus, The Czech Republic, France, Germany (Berlin, Munich or Frankfurt), Ireland or the United States (except from Chicago, San Francisco or Washington DC). In this case, you can arrange for your extra baggage at the airport. This means that the discount will not apply.

Musical instruments
You can bring your musical instrument in one of four ways:
As check-in baggage:
Your musical instrument must be packed in a hard case. We are not liable for damage if your instrument is not properly packed. The standard excess baggage fees apply if your total baggage including instrument and packaging exceed the maximum free allowance.
A musical instrument with a length of up to 100 cm (39 inches) can be transported as a single item of baggage, within your standard baggage allowance. If your instrument with packaging is larger than 203 cm (80 inches) (l + w + h), or is heavier than 32 kg (70 lbs), then you should request permission.
As hand baggage:
You may take a musical instrument, such as a guitar or smaller instrument, with you as hand luggage, but not in addition to your standard hand baggage allowance. The total dimensions may not exceed 115 cm/45 in (l + w + h).
On an extra seat:
Larger instruments which do not fit in the overhead baggage compartment or under the seat can be taken into the cabin to be transported on a seat booked in advance. This is only possible if your instrument is not longer than 140 cm (55 inches) and does not weigh more than 46 kg (100 lbs). Please always contact KLM Telephone Reservations at least 48 hours before departure to book a seat for your instrument.
As freight:
If your musical instrument weighs in excess of 46 kilograms (100 lbs) or is larger than 406 cm (160 inches) (l + w + h) you may only transport your instrument as freight using AIR FRANCE-KLM Cargo.
