Air Transat Carry-On Allowance 2014 ↑ Back to Top

Carry-On Summary

Most flights in economy class allow only 1 piece of carry-on, limited to 10kg in weight (22 lbs). Exceptions are for flights to/from Florida, and to/from Ireland and the UK, where there is a tight restriction of 5kg (11lbs) for carry-on.

Air Transat is one of those airlines that actually weighs your carry-on, and will make you re-pack if needed, so be sure to check carefully how much you are allowed for your destination.

Club Class passengers are usually allowed up to 15kg of carry-on, free of charge.

Checked Baggage Summary

Economy class passengers are allowed either 20kg or 23kg (44lb - 50lb) as checked baggage, depending on the destination. By purchasing the Option Plus package when booking your flight, you'll usually get an additional 10kg (22lbs) of checked baggage allowance to most destinations.

Club Class passengers have a more liberal free baggage allowance, usually 40kg total, spread over 2 pieces.

Air Transat does have quite a few exceptions, such as for cruise passengers, as well as for specific routes including Montreal-Haiti, Toronto-Montego Bay, and flights to/from Portugal, so be sure to check exact rules for your specific route.

Air Transat Oversize/Overweight Baggage Fees 2014 ↑ Back to Top

Excess/Oversize/Overweight Summary

Overweight and Oversize baggage is either charged per kilogram, at a rate of $15/kg, or at a flat rate of $75 per overweight bag, depending on the destination of your flight.

If you will be travelling with overweight bags, it is recommended to pre-purchase your overweight fee online before you travel, using Air Transat's "KiloFlex" program. You can buy increments of 5kg or 10kg of additional weight allowance, at a much cheaper rate than if paying at the airport. These will usually have to be purchased about 10 days prior to your trip in order to get the savings, which are about 30% off the airport price.

Another option to explore is upgrading to Option Plus, which offers about 10kg of extra baggage allowance for most routes, as well as other "benefits" such as alcoholic drinks, priority dinner service, extra snacks included, etc.

Reminder: No single bag can weigh more than 32kg.

If you'll be taking additional pieces of baggage, such as a second or third suitcase, the first piece above the number you have "free" will cost you $100, with every additional bag after that usually going for $200.

Depending on how much extra baggage/weight you're taking, it sometimes makes sense to pack into heavier bags and pre-purchase the overweight fee, than to pack into separate bags.
