Hand baggage or carry-on baggage is baggage that passengers are allowed to take on board in the aircraft cabin.

To be carried in the cabin of the aircraft with you, this baggage must:
Fit under the seat in front of you or in a designated enclosed baggage storage compartment;
Comply with our Conditions of Carriage
Comply with applicable laws and security measures including those imposed by airports; and

Note: If your baggage meets the above requirements, but we reasonably believe that it is not safe for your baggage to be carried as hand baggage, we may require you to check it in.

Policy
For your own safety and comfort, the number and size of baggage you may carry into the cabin is limited. Air Mauritius policy with respect to cabin baggage is as hereunder:

In addition we will also accept:
A handbag, pocket or purse (which is appropriate to normal travelling dress and which is not being used as a container for articles which otherwise could be regarded as baggage).
An overcoat, wrap or blanket
An umbrella or walking stick
A laptop or a small camera and/or binoculars
A reasonable amount of reading matter for the flight
Infant's food for consumption in flight.
Infant's carrying basket
A fully collapsible invalid's wheelchair and/or a pair of crutches and/or braces providing the passenger is dependent on them (either in hold or cabin as space permits).
A reasonable quantity of duty free purchases

Safety
Items classified as dangerous goods under IATA regulations and specified at check-in time will not be accepted into hand baggage.

Air Mauritius Checked Baggage Fees 2012 - Checked Bag Weight & Size Limits

Before packing your baggage, we strongly recommend you consider the following:

European Routes
Effective 1st February 2012, the free baggage allowance per passenger (adult or child) and the rates for excess baggage on Air Mauritius online flights between Mauritius and Europe are as follows:


Each piece of baggage should not exceed 158 cm (Length + Width + Height). For oversized baggage exceeding 158 cm, a flat fee of USD 300 (Ex-Mauritius) or EUR 300 (Ex-Europe) is payable.

On European routes (excluding Paris), for the first piece no fee will be charged if baggage weight exceeds 23 kg up to a maximum of 30 kg. On second and third pieces, for any excess weight from 23 kg to a maximum of 32kg per piece of baggage, a fee will be charged as follows:
< From Europe to Mauritius - EUR 100
From Mauritius to Europe - USD 100

On Paris route, for any excess weight from 23 kg to a maximum of 30kg per piece of baggage, a fee will be charged as follows:
From Paris to Mauritius - EUR 100
From Mauritius to Paris - USD 100

The following categories of passengers will be entitled to one free additional piece of luggage up to a maximum of 23 kg irrespective of class of travel. This free additional piece applies to the second piece of luggage. Applicable rates will be charged for third and fourth pieces of luggage:

Kestrelflyer Gold & Silver card holders. The additional allowance will be given upon presentation of card at the airport.
Students travelling on basis of Student fares. The additional allowance will be mentioned on the ticket.
Seamen traffic travelling on Seaman's fares. The additional allowance will be specified on ticket.

Passengers including students who already benefit from one free additional piece of baggage are not entitled to a further extra piece in case they are Kestrelflyer members.

Reunion to Paris
Passengers from Reunion to Paris CDG are entitled to one piece of baggage up to 23 kg. For second piece up to 23 kg, the rate of EUR 55 will be charged. For third piece up to 23 kg, the rate of EUR 200 will be charged. For any excess weight from 23 kg to a maximum of 30kg per piece of baggage, the rate of EUR 100 will be charged.

Europe to Australia and vice versa
For passengers from Europe to Australia, the rate of EUR 200 will be charged for 2nd piece up to 23 kg. For third piece up to 23 kg, the rate of EUR 300 will be charged. For any excess weight from 23 kg to a maximum of 32kg (30kg on Paris route) per piece of baggage, the rate of EUR 100 will be charged.
For passengers from Australia to Europe, the excess baggage rate will be AUD 20 per kg.

Antananarivo, South Africa to Europe
For passengers from Antananarivo, South Africa to Europe, the rate of USD 110 will be charged for 2nd piece up to 23 kg. For third piece up to 23 kg, the rate of USD 200 will be charged. For any excess weight from 23 kg to a maximum of 32kg (30kg on Paris route) per piece of baggage, the rate of USD 100 will be charged.

Non-European Routes
The free baggage allowance per passenger (adult or child) is as follows:

Students
Students are entitled to 40 kg baggage allowance if travelling on Student fares.

Kestrelflyer members
Kestrelflyer members get extra allowance as follows over and above their baggage entitlement:

Gold Card
Rodrigues: 8 Kg and Other Routes: 12 Kg

Silver Card
Rodrigues: 5 Kg and Other Routes: 8 Kg

Kestrelflyer Gold and Silver card holders may redeem 18,400 of their miles for an additional piece of baggage (not exceeding 23 kg) over and above their free baggage allowance.

Non-European routes (excluding Rodrigues):
Economy Class: 30 Kg
Business Class: 40 Kg

Rodrigues Route (except for travel to/from Australia)
Economy Class: 15 Kg

Europe - Rodrigues
For through check-in from Europe to Rodrigues, passengers have to pay for any excess weight above 15 kg on the Mauritius-Rodrigues sector at the applicable rate. Excess to be collected at embarkation point in Europe. Conditions apply.

Australia - Mauritius and Australia - Rodrigues route via Mauritius
Economy Class: 23 Kg

Following Conditions apply:
Between AUSTRALIA and MAURITIUS (Economy Class)
For travel in Economy Class between MAURITIUS and AUSTRALIA on AIR MAURITIUS / VIRGIN BLUE joint fares only, a baggage allowance of 23 kg will apply to all passengers including Kestrelflyer members. For travel on other airlines, their normal baggage allowance will apply.

Between AUSTRALIA and RODRIGUES
Passengers travelling on this route on Air Mauritius will have a total baggage allowance of 23 kg. This luggage entitlement will apply for all the sectors on the route namely Australia-Mauritius and vice versa as well as Mauritius-Rodrigues and vice versa.

For passengers traveling from Australia to Rodrigues via Mauritius, baggage will be checked-in to Mauritius and during transit at SSR airport staff will ensure that passengers are given the 23 kgs baggage allowance for the Mauritius-Rodrigues sector. The same process will apply for passengers traveling Rodrigues via Mauritius to Australia.

CONDITIONS:
Passengers must be travelling on a single through ticket.
Passengers' baggage must be through checked from originating port in Australia or Rodrigues.
In the event that flights between Mauritius and Rodrigues are subject to weight restrictions, there may be a possibility that passengers' baggage may not be carried on the same flight. In this instance, baggage will be transported on the next available Air Mauritius flight.

Infants Baggage Allowance
Infants (under two years) benefit from a free baggage allowance of 10 kg and free transport of a stroller and one piece of cabin baggage on international flights. On the Rodrigues route, infants are allowed a free baggage allowance of 5 kg plus one stroller and one piece of cabin baggage.

European Routes Excess Baggage Rates
On European routes (excluding Paris), for the first piece no fee will be charged if baggage weight exceeds 23 kg up to a maximum of 30 kg. On second and third pieces, for any excess weight from 23 kg to a maximum of 32kg per piece of baggage, a fee will be charged as follows:
From Europe to Mauritius - EUR 100
From Mauritius to Europe - USD 100

On Paris route, for any excess weight from 23 kg to a maximum of 30kg per piece of baggage, a fee will be charged as follows:
From Paris to Mauritius - EUR 100
From Mauritius to Paris - USD 100

Baggage exceeding 32 kg (30kg on Paris route) will not be accepted at check-in and will have to be sent by freight. Alternatively, the passenger can transfer any excess to an extra piece of baggage and pay the applicable charge for the latter.

Europe to Australia and vice versa
For passengers from Europe to Australia, For any excess weight from 23 kg to a maximum of 32kg (30kg on Paris route) per piece of baggage, the rate of EUR 100 will be charged.
For passengers from Australia to Europe, the excess baggage rate will be AUD 20 per kg.

Antananarivo, South Africa to Europe
For passengers from Antananarivo, South Africa to Europe, For any excess weight from 23 kg to a maximum of 32kg (30kg on Paris route) per piece of baggage, the rate of USD 100 will be charged.

Non-European Routes - Excess Baggage rates
Excess baggage rates per kg are as follows:

Specific routings via Mauritius for interlining passengers
Special excess baggage rates are applicable for passengers travelling via Mauritius on the following routings:

Multi-sector Air Mauritius/Other Airlines (other than Air France) routings from and to Mauritius
As per IATA Resolution 302, baggage entitlement for all types of routings will be automatically specified on the ticket or itinerary receipt at time of issuance. In case passengers have excess luggage over and above their entitlement as written on their tickets, they will be charged as per the baggage policy of the airline which is the Most Significant Carrier (MSC). The MSC for any given through check-in routing involving more than one airline will be automatically determined in the Computer Reservations and Ticketing Systems as per IATA Baggage Rules.

The excess baggage charges for the specified routings below will apply if Air Mauritius is the Most Significant Carrier (MSC) under IATA baggage rules.

European Routes

Non-European Routes
Excess Baggage rate per kg

For passengers travelling to Mauritius on mixed routing Other airlines/Air Mauritius issued under the same contract of carriage, the rules of the carrier checking the baggage are applicable.

Purchase of excess baggage prior to departure
Passengers have the possibility to pay for their excess baggage charges (on both weight and piece concepts) at time of ticket issuance. This will help reduce congestion at check-in and avoid loss of time.

Excess baggage vouchers can be purchased prior to departure at Air Mauritius offices (Town office or at the Airport) at applicable destinations only.

Additional service fees may be applied.

The excess baggage allowance is valid for flights and dates shown on the excess baggage ticket which is non-refundable and non-transferable (in whole or in part).

Important Advice on Baggage
Certain airports, including Mauritius, restrict the weight of any single piece of baggage to 30kg for health and safety reasons.
Although we take reasonable care in handling you baggage, it must be strong enough to withstand normal handling.
Your bag should bear a clearly visible tag or sticker with your name and ideally your telephone number.

Important Note to passengers proceeding to India
Please find below mandatory requirements for passengers arriving from international flight and connecting on domestic flight in India.
All passengers arriving into India on International flights need to clear their baggage through customs at the first port of entry in India. This is a mandatory requirement and needs to be done even if the baggage has been through tagged till the final destination within India. Failing to do this may result in the passenger reporting bags as missing/lost on arrival at final destination within India.
Liquids/Aerosols/Gels (LAG's) which are purchased in the duty free are not allowed in Cabin Baggage on domestic flights in India.

Sports Equipment
EUROPE ROUTES
The transport of sports equipment {Diving, cycling, surfing, skiing equipment, etc} is included in the free baggage allowance, provided they do not exceed 200cm in dimension (length + width + height). This type of equipment is considered as equivalent to one single piece of baggage. In case the total number of pieces, including sports equipments, exceeds the free baggage allowance, the charge for extra pieces will apply as per the piece concept policy.

Sports equipment whose dimension (L+W+H) exceed 200cm cannot be included in free baggage allowance and a flat fee of USD 200 (Ex-Mauritius) and EUR 200 (Ex Europe) is payable.

The following items cannot be included in free baggage allowance and a flat fee of USD 200 (Ex-Mauritius) and EUR 200 (Ex Europe) is payable:
Surfboard > 200 cm
Diving bottles
Hunting trophies
Sports equipment whose dimension (L+W+H) exceed 200cm

REST OF NETWORK (except RODRIGUES ROUTE)
Sports equipment can be included in checked baggage, provided they do not exceed 200cm in dimension (length + width + height). If the total weight exceeds normal baggage entitlement, a flat fee per trip each way within a 23 kg limit per set of equipment will be charged as follows:
South Africa/Reunion/Antananarivo - EUR 20
Other routes (except EUROPE and RODRIGUES ) - EUR 40
If the dimension (L+W+H) of sports equipment exceeds 200cm then a charge of USD 200 is payable.

Ship Models
Ship models will be accepted as checked baggage against payment of flat fee of USD 55. Dimensions (length + width + height) must not exceed 95 cm and weight up to maximum of 5 kg.

Valuable items
We recommend you pack valuable items in your cabin baggage and keep them with you at all times.
Should you decide to pack them in your checked baggage, it is advisable you contract additional insurance cover as our liability is strictly limited.

Medication
If you need to carry medication, we recommend you:
Place them in your hand baggage
Carry prescriptions as it may be required by security or customs officials.

Carriage of frozen food on board ATR ex-Rodrigues
Please find below our policy regarding the carriage of frozen food on board the ATR aircraft ex-Rodrigues.

Frozen food should be:
Either:
Packed in plastic bags and enclosed in a hermetically sealed cooler box.
Or
Packed in sealed plastic bags and placed in polystyrene box and the whole being wrapped with plastic sheets. Passengers will be required to use the wrapping service at SGD Airport.
Or
Packed in sealed plastic bags, wrapped in newspaper (to absorb moisture) and then packed in a carton box before undergoing wrapping service at SGD Airport

Additional measures:
Maximum weight of product per package/box should not exceed 5 kg.
No ice or dry ice to be used in the packages during air transportation.
Air Mauritius staff at the Airport and the officers of Airport of Rodrigues will ensure integrity of packages prior to acceptance at check-in counters in Rodrigues.

Passenger with disabilities
Air Mauritius provides mobility aids at airports for passengers with reduced mobility. Special arrangements are available for passengers with other disabilities. In some cases we may require that the passenger be escorted. You need to advise Air Mauritius Reservations of such need preferably not later than 72 hours before departure.
