Westjet allows you to bring on board with you 2 pieces of carry-on, each of which may weigh up to a maximum of 10kg (22 lbs).
The maximum size for your carry-on is 55 x 23 x 40cm (21.5 x 9 x 15.5 in). The second item has a smaller maximum size, limited to 43 x 16 x 33cm (16.5 x 6 x 13 in).
There are special limits for those travelling to/from Jamaica, where only 1 piece of carry-on is permitted.+ Show Full Policy
These allowances apply to all flights operated by WestJet, including domestic, U.S., international and chartered flights.
Our WestJet Encore aircraft have a little less room for carry-on baggage, but we plan to pack them full of the safe, fun and friendly experience you have come to know. WestJet Encore specific allowances are below.
Travelling with one of our airline partners? Be sure to familiarize yourself with their baggage fees as they may be different from ours.
Carry-on baggage allowance
¹We encourage guests to independently place carry-on and/or personal items in to the overhead bins. If you have difficulty doing so, assistance is available upon request.
²Kennels are considered a piece of carry-on baggage or a personal item and may have a maximum size of 40 cm L x 44 cm W x 21.5 cm H (16 in. L x 17.5 in. W x 8.5 in. H).
In addition to the carry-on baggage allowance, the following items are also permitted:
³We may accept irregularly sized approved medical devices which exceed the carry-on baggage allowance, if the device can be stowed in an approved location without exceeding the weight limit for the most appropriate area in the aircraft, and it will not obstruct access to safety equipment, exits or the aisle. In all cases, acceptance of these items is at the sole discretion of WestJet.
In the rare event that your checked baggage is delayed or damaged, we strongly recommend the following items be packed in your carry-on:
Carry-on items must:
Fit in the sizing device at check-in;
Be light enough to allow you to place the bag in the overhead compartment unaided. If you have difficulty doing so, assistance is available upon request;
Be stored under the seat or in the overhead compartment onboard the aircraft;
Be acceptable as carry-on for the country to which you are travelling. Acceptable items vary by country. Visit catsa.gc.ca to confirm what you are able to bring before your flight as WestJet is not responsible for items not permitted through security, at your point of departure or upon arrival at your destination.
Pass through security. Make sure your carry-on complies as things you might not consider, like shampoo, perfume, toothpaste and moisturizers are only permitted in limited amounts.
You are not permitted to attach any unapproved device to any part of your seat or any other part of the aircraft. Some examples of unapproved devices include knee defenders, seat belt extensions and booster seats.
Although seats may not be purchased for instruments, we will accept small instruments as part of the carry-on baggage allowance. Exceptions may be made for irregular-sized instruments. All instruments must be stowed in the overhead compartment, under the seat or in other approved locations. This is left to the discretion of the cabin crew and Customer Service Agent upon checking flight and baggage loads. Instruments may also be accepted in checked baggage when they are properly packed. Applicable excess baggage fees will apply.
Westjet has introduced new baggage fees recently, incrasing the price of a 2nd checked bag. You will now be charged $25 + tax for the first bag, and $35+tax for a second bag, with additional bags now being charged $100 each. Only on flights outside of Canada/US, you are still allowed 1 free checked bag.
The maximum allowable weight for the checked bag is 23kg (50lb), and must not exceed 157cm (62in) in size. These are linear dimensions, meaning the sum of Length + Width + Height of your item must not exceed 157cm.+ Show Full Policy

The excess baggage fee has been increased from $75 to $100 for a 3rd or 4th bag. Oversize/Overweight fees also apply for any oversized/overweight bag (exceeding 23kg/50lbs, or larger than 157cm). Please note these are cumulative fees, so you may be charged all three fees if applicable (extra bag + oversize + overweight).
Special fees for sporting equipment and other oversize baggage do exist, be sure to check the specific rules for those items with Westjet if you're planning to fly with them.+ Show Full Policy
Any piece of baggage exceeding the size or weight allowance is subject to all applicable oversized weight and size restrictions and fees.
If you are bringing overweight or oversized baggage, we recommend that you arrive 30 minutes prior to the recommended check-in times to allow time for screening.
¹Guests travelling to Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago are not permitted oversized baggage, with the exception of one golf bag that must contain golf clubs.
²Guests travelling to Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago are not permitted overweight items.
³For baggage over this weight, please contact WestJet Cargo at 1-866-952-2746 (1-866-WJCARGO).
Because suitcases aren't the only things you want to pack, it's best to be aware that sporting equipment checked in separately from baggage will count as one piece of checked baggage. Below you'll find info on bringing everything from surfboards to ski boots to soccer balls.
Sporting equipment overview
WestJet will accept sporting equipment that meets the requirements for air travel for domestic, U.S., international and chartered flights.
The maximum length accepted is 9.8 feet for any sports item.
Sporting equipment is subject to all applicable excess baggage fees unless otherwise stated. Fees are combinable where applicable. For example, if an item is overweight, oversized and a second item, all three fees may apply.
For additional packing instructions, more detail on restrictions or other information related to sporting equipment, please contact WestJet at: 1-888-937-8538 (1-888-WESTJET).
WestJet allows service and specialty animals in the cabin of the aircraft, free of charge, when on duty. Please note that the policies for the acceptance of service and specialty animals of our partner airlines may be different from ours.
Service animals are defined as dogs required for assistance to a person with a cognitive or physical disability.
If you feel your service animal requires additional floor space to ensure its comfort and safety on board, please be prepared to provide your dog's weight, length, height and width so we can accommodate your animal. We will determine seating needs based on the size of your animal as defined in the Canadian Transportation Agency's Code of Practice and their Implementation Guide Regarding Space for Service Dogs Onboard Large Aircraft.
A Registered Certificate Identification card, other written documentation and the presence of harnesses or tags will be accepted as proof that the dog is a service animal.
For flights departing to and from the U.S. WestJet follows the U.S. Department of Transportation guideline for Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Disability in Air Travel and will also accept the credible verbal assurance of the qualified individual with a disability using the dog on WestJet aircraft.
WestJet will accept dogs in training to become service animals, provided the following conditions are met:
The animal must be a minimum of eight weeks of age.
The trainer should carry a letter from the assistance animal organization stating that they are a certified handler of the animal.
The animal must wear their training vest at all times while on board the aircraft.
Emotional support animals
WestJet allows emotional support animals in the cabin of the aircraft, free of charge, when performing a required support service.
Please note that the policies for the acceptance of service and specialty animals of our partner airlines may be different from ours.
Emotional support animals are defined as dogs that provide support for an emotional disability and are required as an accommodation for air travel or for activities at the guest's destination. Only one emotional support dog will be permitted per guest, and may travel in a kennel, or if properly harnessed they may travel at your feet.
Reserving a wheelchair and or assistance

If you have your own wheelchair, we can help with that as well. Just make sure that when contacting us we understand what those needs are so we can ask the proper questions to ensure we can help you in the best way possible.
Please be aware that WestJet Encore flights are ground loaded. Please contact us if you need extra help getting to the aircraft and on board.
We accept wheelchairs powered by wet or dry cell batteries. However, safety-related handling and battery packaging is required. If you call us at 1-888-937-8538 (1-888-WESTJET), we will be able to provide you with more details on wet or dry cell battery acceptance.
In addition to the checked baggage allowance, each guest is permitted to bring one medically required wheelchair at no extra charge*; however, it must be carried in the cargo compartment of the aircraft. Braces, crutches, walkers and canes, along with other assisting devices, will also be accepted free of charge*.
*If you do not medically require the wheelchair yourself, you may transport it in checked baggage, however all applicable checked and excess baggage fees will apply.
