Virgin Australia will accept your windsurfing gear within your checked baggage allowance, as long as it is within the accepted weight limit of 23 kg - otherwise an overweight fee applies (up to a maximum weight of 32 kg).

Your windsurf bag represents one piece of checked baggage, and may be exchanged for a standard suitcase in your checked baggage allowance. [AMZ asins='B07WSRXMS8,3903038180,3937323228,B00JE3E028']

Virgin Australia’s fleet includes a number of different aircraft types, all of which have slightly different operational limitations that affect the weight and size of the baggage they can carry. Most modern windsurfing gear should fit within these size restrictions.

Aircraft Type - Maximum Length
Boeing 737 - 3.0 metres in length (9'10")
Airbus A320 - 9.8 metres in length (depending on the flexibility of the item)
F100 - 6.0 metres in length (depending on the flexibility of the item)

You may need to purchase additional bags if flying with your board bag in addition to your standard baggage. Keep in mind, if flying on a Lite fare, that your fare does not include any free checked bags - you will have to add and pay for all bags online before your flight.

You may pre-purchase up to a maximum of 2 additional checked bags ahead of time - if you need more bags, you will only be able to add and pay for them at the airport, at the higher "At the Airport" rate, during check-in:

Virgin Australia Domestic Baggage Fees 2023 - Short Flights Less than 3 Hours
Online: $55
Guest Contact Centre: $60
At the Airport: $110

Virgin Australia Domestic Baggage Fees 2023 - Longer Flights 3+ Hours
Online: $60
Guest Contact Centre: $80
At the Airport: $160

Virgin Australia Short-Haul International Baggage Fees 2023
Online: $75
Guest Contact Centre: $100
At the Airport: $160

If your surfboard bag exceeds the 23 kg weight limit (up to a maximum weight of 32 kg), you will be charged an overweight fee. Depending on how many bags you are flying with, it may make more sense to pay for an extra checked bag, and split your gear into a boardbag and quiver bag, each below 23 kg, rather than pay the overweight baggage fee.

Virgin Australia Domestic Overweight Baggage Fee: $50
Virgin Australia Short-Haul International Overweight Baggage Fee: $100 AUD / NZD
