UPDATE: For 2023, United Airlines has once again began to accept windsurfing equipment, after not accepting windsurf boards in 2022. United Airlines will now accept your windsurf board bag as one piece of checked luggage, in place of a standard suitcase.

If your windsurfing equipment is within your regular free checked baggage allowance, you can bring it in place of one standard suitcase. If your windsurf gear is in addition to your checked luggage allowance, United Airlines's standard checked baggage fee will apply. [AMZ asins='B07WSRXMS8,3903038180,3937323228,B00JE3E028']

Please keep in mind that United Airlines may still charge the Oversize and Overweight (if applicable) luggage fees for your boardbag. If you have yet to buy your flight, we recommend looking to fly with Alaska Airlines or American Airlines for bringing your windsurfing equipment.

Updated Windsurf Equipment Luggage Rules for United Airlines in 2023:

You can bring one set of windsurfing equipment if you’re flying on United:

One windsurfing board (less than 115 in or 292 cm total)
One boom
One mast
One sail
Necessary hardware

Windsurf equipment should weigh less than 99.9 pounds (45.3 kg) and should be checked as a special item. It must be padded and enclosed in a package that will protect it from scratches, dents and other damage during normal handling.

You can’t bring windsurfing equipment on United Express flights or if there’s an extra bag limit / baggage embargo on your flight.

---------------------

These items may be subject to standard service charges for oversized ($200+ depending on destination) and overweight ($100-$200+ depending on destination) bags. Fees for first, second and excess checked bags may also apply. We do NOT recommend flying United with windsurfing equipment - Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta are better options.

Flights to/from California
As of a couple of years, United accepts surfboards free of charge (no Oversize Luggage Fee) on flights to/from California (note that flights connecting through California are not eligible). This exemption includes SUP boards, so if you can convince the check-in agent that your windsurfer is an SUP board, you may be able to check it free of charge, paying only the standard checked baggage fee without the extra $150-$200 Oversize Luggage charge. Good luck!
